Last week a group of students from a variety of majors visited three different farms. The trip started at Freedom Food Farm, a regenerative vegetable and livestock farm. Students learned about the production aspect of agriculture, the unique systems they use to heat their greenhouse, soil health, and how their different livestock species work together to promote each other’s health.
The next stop was the Plymouth County Sheriffs Farm. Meg Riley, Plymouth County Extension Educator, explained the benefit of a rehabilitative agricultural program for inmates. In one group, students explored agricultural career opportunities, and practiced conducting a livestock inspection across the farm petting zoo. Another group of students learned about the hydroponic and aquaponic farm systems, which feed local programs.
Finally, we stopped at the Taunton Boys & Girls Club community kitchen and freight farm. The students learned about their program and how they serve their community through meals and produce grown in their freight container vertical farm!
Thank you so much to these community farms for sharing their modern agricultural systems with our students! It was very educational and inspiring for our youth in ag.🍀🪴
