The Arboriculture Senior's final and most challenging task was to learn to safely utilize a chainsaw in a tree while on climbing spurs. Although a very difficult task, the climbers did great and finished the removal!🌳 #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence #Arboriculture

This year, students in the ECD Environmental Engineering program successfully cultivated more than 60 American Chestnut trees in partnership with the The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF). These seedlings will be distributed to local sportsmen’s clubs as part of ongoing efforts to restore the once-dominant American Chestnut population. A special thank you to the Somerset Sportsmans Club for your continued support, collaboration, and commitment to this important restoration initiative. Environmental Engineering Seniors are pictured here planting and recording valuable growth data that will continue to be utilized to improve the TACF's comprehensive breeding program.🌱 #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence #EnviromentalConservation

On Tuesday afternoon, we welcomed Kat and Peter from Reed’s Farm in Sunderland to work with our Livestock students. They led a session on the proper and humane dispatch of chickens for meat—an important part of understanding the full food system. Kat and Peter started with a clear demonstration, focusing on doing the process correctly, respectfully, and with animal welfare in mind. Students then had the opportunity to participate hands-on, at their own comfort level, with Kat and Peter beside them to guide. It was a valuable experience and one that reinforced the responsibility that comes with raising animals for food. The birds used were pasture-raised at Bristol Aggie, resulting in a more nutrient-dense product and a high-quality source of protein. We’re grateful to Kat and Peter for sharing their expertise and for providing our students with an authentic, meaningful learning opportunity. #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence #Chickens #Livestock

Two of our horticulture majors, Landscape and Flori, were very excited to host a group of very enthusiastic students from Dighton Elementary School for a field trip last week to learn about horticulture! These First graders were able to have hands-on experience and ask lots of questions. They rotated through three stations: 1. Learning about plants and how to divide roots-getting a plant to take home. Thank you to Landscape students 2. They learned about and identified a few trees in our arboretum. Thank you to Mr. Latham 3. They did a story walk, followed by a song and filled out interactive booklets. Thank you to Ms. Noel, Mrs. Chevalier and our Flori students They also all got a crop to take home to plant- a tomato plant, a broccoli plant or a squash plant! #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence #thefutureofag #teachthemyoung

Freshman floriculture used the rototiller to prepare the beds for strawberry planting. They added bloodmeal and earthworm castings before planting about 175 bare rooted plugs. These strawberries will supply our program for years to come! #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence

Yesterday, a group of students from a variety of different majors visited Benson’s Pond Cranberry Bog and Frogfoot Farm. At Benson’s Pond, they had the opportunity to learn about the family-run operation, the process of growing cranberries, and the unique natural fertilizers they use to support the growth of the cranberries, including fermented cranberries! They also learned about new technology and job opportunities within the cranberry industry. Frogfoot is a sustainable farm that addresses food insecurity and farm waste through agroecological farming, gleaning, and volunteer action. Students had the opportunity to learn about how they support their surrounding communities, along with helping with tasks including planting, prepping beds and laying mulch. Thank you so much to these wonderful farms for their insights and for providing these opportunities to our students!🌱

Yesterday, Arboriculture seniors practiced using climbing spurs in preparation for learning how to bring equipment up into the tree and perform removals safely and efficiently. These students will be well prepared for the workforce with a strong foundation of knowledge in specialized tree work. A few students also utilized new equipment they won at the Arbor Jamboree, courtesy of Arbsession and Nadeau Tree Services. We are so grateful for your support. It is truly beneficial to the growth and success of our students. 🌳 #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence #Arboriculture #TreeWork

Last week, our Floriculture and Livestock students came together to explore the wonders of cheesemaking through a hands-on collaborative learning experience. Using local milk generously donated by Arruda’s Dairy, students created two fresh cheeses while learning about the science and craftsmanship behind the process. The first cheese, a fromage blanc cultured overnight, gave students the opportunity to observe curds and whey before scooping the curds into cheesecloth to take home. The second cheese was inspired by Squacquerone — a fresh, mildly cultured cheese similar to Portuguese fresh cheese with a slight tang. Students added the calcium chloride, rennet, and culture themselves before cutting the curds and placing them into molds. To complete the experience, students also created their own charcuterie plates using cheeses generously donated by Narragansett Creamery and Smith’s. A huge thank you to all of our donors and community partners for supporting hands-on agricultural education and helping provide meaningful farm-to-school learning opportunities for our students. 🐄🧀🌱 #BAPride #CultivatingExcellence #FarmtoSchool
